Education is Killing Creativity

A great segment about the current state of education. Sir Ken Robinson is a funny, engaging speaker. This is well worth a view if you've ever thought the way we teach our children is counter-intuitive.

A Tiny Day in the Jackson Hole Backcountry

This is just about the coolest video I've ever seen. My wife and I were married in Jackson, Wyoming. I think we'll go back there for a 'tiny' ten-year anniversary celebration.

Big day for Apple in Ireland

Originally written for TUAW on 25 March 2011

The queue

After a slow start it turned out to be a big day for Apple and the iPad 2 in Ireland - the Irish wouldn't have it any other way on such a gorgeous Spring day.

When I arrived at 2:00 pm, I was 22 out of about 35. By the time the shop opened at 5:00, the queue quickly ballooned to well over 200 hopefuls for a rumored 200 iPads available. Compu b was well organized, taking a tally of customers (on an iPad, of course) to ensure there was minimal disappointment. They even passed out sandwiches early on to the hardcore fans and O2 marketing girls came along to pass out vouchers for a free pay-as-you-go wireless hotspot dubbed the Hotshot. This made the decision to opt for WiFi-only much easier.

I was also interviewed by 3e - see the :44 mark - alas, my plug for TUAW ended up on the digital cutting room floor. Nintendo even had a bit of hype with their bold, simultaneous launch of the 3DS. But that was no match for iPad 2. The camaraderie this afternoon was great with other like-minded Apple fans, which is no surprise in the land of the gift of the gab. My queue buddies also embodied the worldwide launch in this small, international city: Polish, American, Brazilian, Chinese and Irish. We had a blast geeking out over Apple's latest creation.

Now that my literal, as well as figurative batteries are drained, it's time for an Irish stout and a whiskey while enjoying my new iPad 2. Sláinte!

Check out the video and photo gallery and my coverage on TUAW: iPad 2 Ireland launch guide and iPad 2 launch day in Ireland from the big iPad 2 launch in Dublin.

Incredible video of liquefaction during earthquake in central Tokyo

# Liquefaction in central Tokyo park

This is an incredible video of the phenomenon known as liquefaction that occurred during the 2011 Sendai earthquake in Japan. The soft ground shook so violently that the underlying silt essentially turned to JELL-O.
